The purpose of a music video is to advertise a song which the band/singer has created. It advertises the song mostly on the internet but if it is a song that is by a popular band/singer and it would be in the charts on TV where people will see it further increasing the popularity of the singer/band.
A song that has been released of a band/singers album normally has a music video created for it to raise the profile of the band just before the album is released to increase sales of the album. If the promo is exceptionally good it will get more publicity therefore increasing the bands popularity, getting them more sales of singles and albums.
