We have started to create our digipak, for this we used a 6 pannel digipak template which I found of the internet. We are halfway through creating our digipak as we have not got enough pictures and will be taking more pictures in the near future.
Our first picture was one we caught will filming. Which is on the left we are going to be using this as our album cover. Firstly we put this picture into photoshop which I then procceded to edit and change some of the features.
I firstly started by cropping the picture so that the picture is square which is what shape an album cover normally is. I then blurred the bottom half of the picture slightly to make it look proffesional, I also added the text and made them different colours so you are able to see that one is the band name and the other is the song. The 'Green Eyed Monster' is in green obviously because there is green in the title and it relates.
The Wombats, 'This Modern Glitch' is an indie album which was released in 2011. The album artwork for this album shows the band and also many other peopl siting on the beach having a picnic with their faces covered over by a picture of a sofa. This is very random and does not have any relation to any of the songs within the album, although it could mean that they are trying to be mysterious and trying to emphasis that it the album is all about the music. The amount of people sitting on the beach could suggest that The Wombats want the album to be shared amongest freinds. Also the picture being on the beach can mean that the music is uplifting and fun as that is how beaches are portraied. The costumes which everyone is wearing on the front cover is all bright, indie clothes. This links into what genre that band are in (Indie) and it will also relate to their listeners as they will also be wearing the same type of clothes if they are inteested in the indie genre. This is a very typical indie band album art cover as it is very random and also bright, colourful and eye-catching.
When we look at how white people are seen in music videos compard to black people you see that they are viewed in a much better light than black people. To prove this you only have to look at the amount of controversy that someone like Miley Cyrus has creatd through acting very sexual and dancing in a sexual way. Howeve if you look into how black woman dance in their videos it is not to dissimilar to Miley. For example Beyonce, Beyonce is know for dancing this way, and she is also known for her curvy body and shaking her 'booty' this is very similar to Miley howeverit cause so much controversy as people expect Beyonce to do this because she isblack where as Miley is not hense why it has been so controversial.
This is not usually how white women are normally betrayed in music videos, stars such as Katy Perry and Ellie Goulding do not perform the same way which Miley does. That is because they follow the stereotypical way in hich white women act in music videos. The act as very sensible independant women who are not objectified by men. Having this stereotype in place again made Miley's videos created even more of a shock.
A stereotype is a preconcvied idea about a person due to their race, area that they live in and also their religion. Stereotypes are often used in music videos, for different races and different sexes. For example:
Black Men
Black men in music videos are normally seen rapping with lots of jewellery and baggy clothes surronded by women wearing barley anything. They try to make black men look as 'street' or as 'gangster' as they can to appeal to the fans of the rap genre of music. An example of this would be 50 cemt's 'Candy shop'
Black Women
In music videos for black women they are usually viewed with no a lot of clothes on and they would be dancing in a provocative manor. For example in Rihanna's most recent video 'Pour it up' were she is dancing in a very sexual way with money.
We had to create a album cover so to start we was randomly chosen a band name, album name and a background picture. The band name I was given was 'Harcourt Arboretum', the album name 'Criminal Rather Than Victim' and the background picture is the picture seen above.
I thought that both the album name and the background picture related with the soul, hip-hop genre of music. So I decided to look at some of the albums for these sort of artists. The first one which I viewed was 'Trilogy' by 'The Weeknd', pictured below.
As you can see from this album cover it is quite similar to mine as they're both black and white and also very simple. I really like this design as it is very simple and easy on the eye, also the type of music this artist produces is very similar to the music you would expect my made up band to make when judging them on their album name and their album cover.
I then went a view other album covers like Frank Ocean's 'Channel Orange' this album cover is also very simple and use minimum colours. This artist also produce the same genre of music so this made me created my design to be simple and also minimise the colours which I use as it seemed like that what this genre of musics album designs are like.
A digipak is a packaging that artists use to package their albums/ singles. Normally a digipak has some sort of desgin that relates to the artist/ band or their album/ single.
An example of a digipak:
Lana Del Rey's 'Born to Die' is an example of the way that albums are packaged using digipak. Having a digipak helps the artist show a artistic side. It also is targeted to the older audiences as it makes them feel nostalgic as buying albums used to be a big thing before the internet, so buying albums will make the older audiences feel young again.
Once we had filmed any footage we would come ack to school and then upload the clips that we had filmed on to the computer via final cut. This program is also the program which we will be using to edit the music video. This picture shows all of our clips we posses after all the excess footage that we had filmed had been cut out and deleted as we would not need it.
Synergy is when two different industry's come together to promote one another and is when both parties benefit from the two joining together. Synergy within the music industry is when a song is used to promote many number of things which range from promoting movies to businesses. This is used as it is a very successful way of gaining more audience if a song is created for a movie this is because people who love that artist see them create a song for this film which makes them very loyal fans want to go see the movie.
A prime example for this is Adele. Adele created the song 'Skyfall' for the newest James Bond movie 'Skyfall'. Adele is a very big artist so getting her to write a song for this movie helps promote the movie to Adele's large fan base which then people apart of her fan base who was not a fan of previous James Bond movies may go and see the new one as one of their idols created the soundtrack for it. Also Adele benefits from this as many people who watch James Bond may not have heard Adele and listening to the soundtrack may entice them to go listen to Adele's music helping her gain more fans.
Another example of this is Justin Timberlake song 'I'm Lovin' it' this song was created to promote McDonalds as it uses there theme tune within the song this again is similar to the Adele situation where both parties benefit from getting their product out to people who may not have come across them before which brings them more fans/customers.
On day 4 we decided that we should go and re-film the shots that we had not done very successfully throughout the days, but mainly from day one. Along with that we also filmed some shots that we had not yet done like the shots which we left that was just the werewolf from the second day of filming and also the shots of the werewolf marking off the day which the full moon appears. The picture on the right is where we filmed these scenes, as there was a drum kit in the room it was a very tight squeeze however we pulled it off in the end.
Our first shot that we attempted was the werewolf marking off the days of the calender these was very tense as we only had one calender so we had to get it perfect. We also had to make it dark in the room to make it look like it was night time so we turned down all the lights and made the room completely dark. This was too dark to film the opening sequence so we used a mood light that David had. So while David was filming Tom mark off the calender I held the light so that it was not to dark for the camera to film.
Our last shot that we tried to film was when the werewolf went to bed. Although this shot sounds simply enough it was very difficult as we had to try and place the camera in the same position as when the werewolf woke as these shots were filmed on different days it made it difficult as we did not have the clip of him waking up on us either.
In Richard Dyer's theory he believes that celebrities are trendsetters by wearing what they wear their audience/ fans will copy the way the dress because they want to be like their idol. Rihanna is an excellent example of this as she has brought out her own clothing line for River Island, this allows her fans to dress like Rihanna, this shows Rihanna using this to her advantage as she knows people will buy these clothes just because she has worn something similar so it is an easy way for her to make money. Another example of Rihanna being a trend setter is to do with her hairstyles. Rihanna has had many hairstyles one of which was dying her hair red, when Rihanna done this there was many many girls who copied her, this is exactly the same for her newesthairstyle where she has shaved the sides, this again was a trend which many girls followed.
We set out to film the band sequence in our drama room at school as there was a lot of free space and a there was also a black curtain which we could use as our backdrop. This was very useful as we didnt want to shot our video of us playing the instruments inside of a school as it would not make any sense to the narrative that we had planned. We also had to borrow the instruments from our music department at school so the first time we went to film the band sequence we only had a short amount of time with them, this caused us a problem as we could only film a couple sequnces, one with the werewolf mask on and the other with it off. So we had to go back on a second day where we was able to film more and have a longer period of time with the instruments.
This first picture is us experimenting with the stage lights that we had on offer. This was an extreme close up on Tom's face with the werewolf mask on. We tried to film it so that it looked like the spot light was on him, although it looked like that when we looked back at it, not much of it was useable so we decided that we was only going to show climpses of this certain shot.
This is us also getting anoter close up on Tom singing the song we used a monopod in this shot so that we could move around Tom and get different angled shots of him lip syncing the song. We also are going to use some shots where the camera is moving as it looks very nice but we will only use it in small parts as it does not look good if it is a long clip of the camera moving around Tom.
We had to use chairs to make the camera eye level with us when filming the band sequence as the legs of the tripod which we was using did not strech out long enpugh. If we had left it below eye level it would not look good as the shots we have now as you would not be able to see our faces that well
Organic music is music created by an artist or band that then is discovered by a record label who then tries to market, produce and sell this artist/bands to the correct market for there genre of music which used to be very dominant in the music industry until talent shows like 'X Factor' and 'The Voice' came about and help make synthetic more dominant in the industry.
Synthetic music is where the record label is in charge of what the type of music the artist or band plays, also what type of audience that they would do best in. They also create Synthetic bands where they get people who have never met before and group them up into a boy/girl band. The most recent of these synthetic bands are one direction where each of the members went on to X Factor individually and got told that they should group up if they wanted to go through. The members have never met before and decided to listen to their advice.
One of the first synthetic bands created was The Monkees. The Monkees was desgined to be Americas Beatles, the members where choosen from over 400 hundred applicants and straight away placed on their own television show which aired from 1966 to 1968. The Monkees biggest hit was I'm a believer.
The monkees sparked many other synthetic bands most notable of them was Boyzone where they was also created and thrown on to the late late show just a day after meeting one and other and as you can imagine the performance given from these was rather shocking. They didnt have any recorded material so all they did to impress the public was dance.
This is Sinead O'Connor's 'Nothing Compares 2 U' music video. This video is basically one big close up of Sinead's face, this was very successful as Sinead conveys all her emotions towards the camera and even at one point even starts to cry. This is successful as the song itself is about Sinead's mother who had just died at the point in the video. This made the song very popular as no one had every seen the amount of emotion shown in the video
A record label is a trademark given to an artist or band to help market their music recordings and music videos. The record labels are in charge of the production, manufacturing, and distribution of the products from the bands and artists that are signed for that record label. You get two different types of record labels, indie record labels and major record labels.
Major record labels are labels that are apart of a large international media group. Since 2012 there are only three companies that can be refereed to as major labels these are; Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and Warner Music Group. These all come from different countries, Universal is owned by a French organisation, Sony by a Japanese business and Warner by an American group.
Indie record labels are labels that are small and localised. These are also known as independent record labels and these are for the up and coming artist who have normally use indie record labels to break in to the major record labels. Some indie labels are; Cherry Red, Criminal Records, and Blue Horizon
Our third day out filming meant that we had to film the love scenes between our werewolf character and Red Riding Hood. We had to film this all in one day as it was the only time in the foreseeable future that the two where going to be available at the same time to film, so it was crucial we collected all the shots we needed on this day. Fortunately we was successful in doing so.
When filming we made sure that we got all the shots when both of the characters are in the shot and left out any of the shots which tom was just in by himself, this is so that we could come back and do these when we was not on such a tight schedule. This allowed us to get all the shots involving Red Riding Hood quickly which is what we needed to do.
Some of the shots that we shot were traditional love moments that you would normally see in a romantic comedy movie. Such as the two kicking leaves at each other in a loving manor. Also the shots like our two subjects holding hands while walking down the road, and them sitting on the corner having a romantic chat. These are all common things that you see when you watch a romantic film. Also while shooting these shots we wanted it to look like weeks were passing by Tom changing his clothes, unfortunately for us Tom left his clothes at home, we had to improvise so we gave tom a different jacket in the different shots to give the illusion that these were on different days.
This video is very unique and therefore memorable, this is because it shows a drawn comic book character reach out and pull a woman from real life into the comic book it then interludes both the comic book world and real world together through very clever editing techniques. In the video you can only see what each other look like through a window. This window disappears when the bad people from the comic run over and then smash the window and continue to chase the pair, the women then is helped out of the comic and then reads the rest of the comic to find his fate but he then escapes and appears in her bedroom.
This was the second video released for this song the first one showed the band singing in front of a blue background this video did not help the bands popularity at all, however the second directed by Steve Barron helped gain the band popularity and helped 'Take on Me' become a hit. This is a perfect example of how a good music video can extremly help increase the popularity of a song
2. Peter Gabriel- Sledgehammer (1986)
This video was created for Peter Gabriel's 'SledgeHammer' and the reason this is at number 2 is because it is also very unique for a music video as it is a stopmotion animation. This is when you take many pictures of and image an put them together to create a moving image, this is kind of like a flip book. Directed by Stephen Johnson who made Peter lay underneath a sheet of glass for almost 16 hours while he had to film the video one fram at a time. One part of the video where Peter is dressed in a Christmas suit dancing around in a frantic motion is actually Peter getting shocked. However it proved successful by winning 9 MTV awards in 1987.
1.Micheal Jackson- Thriller (1983)
This 14 minute video showed a full story of Micheal Jackson with his date after watching a horror movie. On the way home he turns into a zombie and many other zombies appear and start to all do a dance routine to scare his date. it was directed by John Landis and was MTV first everworld premiere video where people all over the world stayed up just to watch this as there would be no other time to unless shown again by MTV.
At the start there is a lot of film before the actual song comes on, the first scene shows micheal turning into a werewolf after just asking his lady friend to be his girl. You soon realise that this is not real life as it cuts to the two watching the film Miceahl laughing but his date being very scared. When they start to walk home two zombies corner them, then micheal himself turns into a zombie like in the film they watched however a different monster. Micheal is joined by other zombies who then start to dance the famous 'thriller' dance. Once that is over the zombies chase the woman once Micheal has caught up with her he reachers for her throat only for the girl to awake realising it is just a nightmare. However on the closing scene Micheal turns around to the camera grinning with yellow werecat eyes.
The buget for this video was $500,000 which is one of the largest budgets ever for a music video, however they were rewarded by wining 2 grammy awards and also 4 MTV awards.
This video is very unique as you are shown street dance act who are performing for the public who are actually unaware that they are filming for a music video. The director and voluteers appear in the video doing the street dance which is quite bad and at a point in the music video the manager of the building they are peforming in comes and turns the music off. This video won 6 MTV awards in 2001.
39. Pulp- Common People (1995)
The video to Pulp's 'Common People' is about a girl from a rich backround wants to be treated and be the same as working class people. This video showed Sadie Frost acting as the woman who wanted to be working class.
38. Fatboy Slim- Weapon of Choice (2001)
The video for 'Weapon of Choice' stars Christopher Walken as he performs a dance routine around his house, he is also propelled into the air where he continues to dance and fly. This makes the video memorable as it had never been done before in a music video. When Christopher was asked by Spike Jonez whether or not he wanted to be apart of this video he immediately agreed.
31. Eminem- Stan
Eminem's 'Stan' is an example of a video that completly follows the lyrics of the song to create a powerful story. The video is about an obbsessed fan of Eminem's who wants to be exactly like him, he writes him letters which Eminem does not reply to. This makes Stan angry and one night while his girlfriend is sneaking around his hideout he throws her in the boot of his car and drives of a bridge killing them both. Afterwards Eminem finally replies only to find out what Stan had done.
This music video was very significant as it was created around the time of the Cold War, which showed the American President having a bare knuckle fight with the Russian President. This was very controversial as you could imagine as it shows two of the most powerful people at the time fighting while their two countries where in real life.
66. Bob Dylans- Subterranean Homesick Blues (1965)
This video shows Bob Dylan stood behind savoy hotel holding up the lyrics of the song while trying to keep in time with the song itself, this was shot in one take and Bob's laidback attitude about it all made him look cool which he already was amongst all of his fans. This music video has inspired many others since.
63. George Micheal- Outside (1998)
This video from George Micheal was very controversial as it was just as he got discovered in public toilets by a police officer, who he later mocked in the video, comminting sexual acts with another man. His career could have gone either way as he came out as being gay, but by making this video of getting helicopters to spy on couples in sexual acts. He also made the video very camp and got two policemen to make out this casued the officer who arrested George to become upset and later tried to sue him for $10 million.
61. The Prodigy- Smack My Bitch Up (1997)
This was another controversial video as it appears to show cases of domestic violennce until the end when you realise that it was a woman on the night out. This was all shot in one night due to the low budget given to the director, who had also directed some of the Madonna videos, and shot the whole video in a point of view shot. This sparked so much controvesy that even MP's wanted it banned for provoking the audience.
The video for 'Once in a lifetime' came in at number 87. This video is also shown in New York Museum as a peice of art. The movements in the video were created after they had visited a mental hospital and observed how the patients acted. Which goes with the meaning of the song as the song is pondering the reality of life and that maybe you have no control over what happens in your life.
79. New order- True Faith (1987)
This video is a perfect example of disjunture which Andrew Goodwin speaks about, disjuncture is when the meaning of the song is completly ignored in the music video, this is what happens in this video when a french dance choreographer directed this music video. He had never made a music video before and had no idea how to create one. MTV stated that they would not show this video unless the band was shown playing the song so they put clips of the band performing at Glastonbury.
78.Godley and Creme- Cry 91985)
This video was very memroable as it used an extreme close up of every actor/actress that they had casted and merged all their faces in and out of each others. To do this they needed evryones head to be in the exact same place so they came up with an idea to put a saucepan on the wall so they knew where to place their head. Also while editing they discover they could use fading techniques to mix facial features and at this time this was very revalutionary.
73. Basement Jaxx- Where's Your Head At? (2002)
This video was a big hit due to the disturbing nature of the monkeys cast in the video, although the monkeys themselves were not disturbing once their faces where removed and replaced with the bands faces it got rather grotesque.
Out of the 100 greatest music videos there are some that stand out because at the time they may have been very controversial, made an impact to the music video world, and also unique. This blog post will look at a few between numbers 98-88. 98. Bronski Beat- Smalltown Boy (1984)
This video was very controversial at this point in time as the band itself were all gay. At this time gay people were not accepted in society. This video was about a gay person moving into a big city from a smalltown. He moves in with a man and a woman who don't know he is gay and once they find out the tell him to leave. There is a scene where he tries to approach a man and tries to get his number however the man is not gay who then gets a group of people to chase the gay man. He then decides to leave the big city and goes back home. This video had a massive impact in society and helped massively in making being gay accepted in society as it showed how gay people were treated and made to feel like an outsiders.
96. So Solid Crew- 21 seconds (2001)
'21 seconds' by the So Solid Crew was a song where each of the 21 members of the band had 21 secondsto rap a part in the song. Each of the rappers had there own entrance and power in the music video such as smashing glass as an entrance or arriving as a tornando. This video really helped boost So Solids Crew publicity however it was not all good.
95. My Favourite Game - The Cardigans (1998)
The video for my favourite game is a woman who is driving careless and trying to rundown everything in her path while singing about her love life failing. The director created three endings for this video one where a rock hits her on the head after surviving the crash, another where her head rolls away, and lastly one where she simple crashes and dies. The one that was chosen was the first, the stone falling on her head.
92.Rockit - Herbie Hancock (1983)
This is a significant video as it was orginally not aloud on MTV in USA as the artist who created the song ( Herbie Hancock) was black, so the two directors made a video with human dolls making random movements to the music. They also got Herbie in the video by placing him on the TV screen. This video was also very controversial due to some movements one of the dolls was making in the bed.
88. I Want Love - Elton John (2001)
The video to Elton Johns 'I want Love' is memorable due to the fact that Elton was not star of the video and did not even appear in the video, this was unheard of at this time. However he got Robert Downey Jr to star instead. Robert had to lip sync the whole song without making a mistake as the directors wanted the whole music video to be one take. At the time Robert was in rehab for his drug addiction and was aloud out to make this video for Elton.
