This video is very unique and therefore memorable, this is because it shows a drawn comic book character reach out and pull a woman from real life into the comic book it then interludes both the comic book world and real world together through very clever editing techniques. In the video you can only see what each other look like through a window. This window disappears when the bad people from the comic run over and then smash the window and continue to chase the pair, the women then is helped out of the comic and then reads the rest of the comic to find his fate but he then escapes and appears in her bedroom.
This was the second video released for this song the first one showed the band singing in front of a blue background this video did not help the bands popularity at all, however the second directed by Steve Barron helped gain the band popularity and helped 'Take on Me' become a hit. This is a perfect example of how a good music video can extremly help increase the popularity of a song
2. Peter Gabriel- Sledgehammer (1986)
This video was created for Peter Gabriel's 'SledgeHammer' and the reason this is at number 2 is because it is also very unique for a music video as it is a stopmotion animation. This is when you take many pictures of and image an put them together to create a moving image, this is kind of like a flip book. Directed by Stephen Johnson who made Peter lay underneath a sheet of glass for almost 16 hours while he had to film the video one fram at a time. One part of the video where Peter is dressed in a Christmas suit dancing around in a frantic motion is actually Peter getting shocked. However it proved successful by winning 9 MTV awards in 1987.
1.Micheal Jackson- Thriller (1983)
This 14 minute video showed a full story of Micheal Jackson with his date after watching a horror movie. On the way home he turns into a zombie and many other zombies appear and start to all do a dance routine to scare his date. it was directed by John Landis and was MTV first everworld premiere video where people all over the world stayed up just to watch this as there would be no other time to unless shown again by MTV.
At the start there is a lot of film before the actual song comes on, the first scene shows micheal turning into a werewolf after just asking his lady friend to be his girl. You soon realise that this is not real life as it cuts to the two watching the film Miceahl laughing but his date being very scared. When they start to walk home two zombies corner them, then micheal himself turns into a zombie like in the film they watched however a different monster. Micheal is joined by other zombies who then start to dance the famous 'thriller' dance. Once that is over the zombies chase the woman once Micheal has caught up with her he reachers for her throat only for the girl to awake realising it is just a nightmare. However on the closing scene Micheal turns around to the camera grinning with yellow werecat eyes.
The buget for this video was $500,000 which is one of the largest budgets ever for a music video, however they were rewarded by wining 2 grammy awards and also 4 MTV awards.
